Recruitment Tips & Support

Borrowing recruitment equipment is only the first step. Successful recruitment often comes from combining eye-catching displays with local promotion, community engagement and a warm welcome for potential volunteers and families.

Ideas for Recruiting New Girls

Consider using your recruitment resources at:

  • School fairs and open evenings
  • Village fetes and community events
  • Family fun days
  • Library and community centre displays
  • Local festivals
  • Christmas and summer events
  • Social media campaigns
  • Bring-a-friend evenings

When attending events, encourage girls to interact with the display, use the selfie frames and take photographs that can be shared on unit social media pages (following Girlguiding photography guidance).

Ideas for Recruiting Volunteers

Many adults are interested in helping but may not realise how flexible volunteering can be.

When speaking to potential volunteers, focus on:

  • Flexible volunteering opportunities
  • Learning new skills
  • Making friends
  • Giving back to the community
  • Supporting girls to develop confidence and life skills
  • Opportunities to volunteer occasionally or regularly

Girlguiding offers a wide range of volunteer roles, from helping at meetings to administration, event support, communications and leadership roles.

Top Tips for Your Recruitment Event

  • Display clear information about your local unit
  • Include meeting day, time and location
  • Have information available for both girls and volunteers
  • Use photographs showing guiding activities
  • Make use of the Hampshire West selfie frames
  • Talk to parents and carers about the benefits of Girlguiding
  • Collect contact details from interested families and volunteers
  • Follow up promptly after the event
  • Share photos and successes on social media afterwards

These simple actions can significantly increase engagement and enquiries.

  • Social media ideas

📧 Becky North
Hampshire West Growing Guiding Coordinator: growing_guiding@gghw.org.uk

No matter whether you're looking for one new volunteer or hoping to grow an entire unit, we can work together to develop a recruitment approach that suits your local community.

Hampshire West Growth Challenge

Could every unit recruit just:

  • One new Rainbow, Brownie, Guide or Ranger?
  • One new volunteer?
  • One occasional helper?
  • One parent or carer willing to support?

Small actions across Hampshire West can create opportunities for many more girls to experience everything that Girlguiding has to offer.

Together, we can grow guiding across Hampshire West. 🌈💙
