1st Response
Girlguiding have updated its website and more information on how the new 6 hour course will now look can be found here https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/making-guiding-happen/learning-and-development/first-aid-training/1st-response-training/
Changes to 1st Response Training
Girlguiding has been working with The Scout Association to bring our 1st Response training in line with other youth organisations and as of 1st November 2020, there will no longer be a two-hour refresher course.
Key details of the new model:
- There will be one course going forward – the full six hours which members will need to do every three years.
- The new course will be split into three distinct modules, each two hours long. This means training can take place as a full day, or as individual modules, so can be delivered more flexibly.
- Options for virtual delivery for five out of the six hours with a one-hour session that requires face to face/practical elements (CPR, recovery position etc). The practical elements will have clear guidance for trainers which address current Covid-19 concerns.
- A short Girlguiding specific e-learning to go alongside this which focuses on the Girlguiding policies and procedures for keeping members safe and reporting accidents and emergencies. This needs to be completed by everyone who does 1st Response and can also be accessed by those who have done external First Aid courses and need Girlguiding specific information.
- The content is the same between Girlguiding and Scout courses, apart from the e-learning module, so volunteers moving between organisations will just need to complete the e-learning to be qualified.
- Girlguiding members can also attend Scout run 1st Response courses, and vice-versa, as they will be delivering the exact same content.
Guidance around acceptable external First Aid qualifications and trainer requirements will also be updated to provide much more clarity.
External First Aid Qualification
A reminder that Lucy and Mary in the Region office are happy to talk to individuals that have gained an external First Aid course. Please contact the office confirming when is a suitable time for the conversation to happen. Once the checklist has been gone through, Lucy and Mary will confirm in writing to the individual (copying in the local Commissioner) that either the course is acceptable or highlighting the gaps. It may be that the gaps can be filled locally or by watching small videos rather than complete the 6 hour course. Telephone: 01722 329306 or email: swehq@ggswe.org.uk
If you have any questions with regards any aspect of training, please contact me.
